Music Everywhere

I learned new music from all around the world and in different areas with different cultures and background but also have not really touched a lot that I think are cool and interesting to know about. So, tag along and read what I saw and learned about types of music and how some of them are traditional or modern in these different places!

---------------------------------

1. Brazil (South America)

So, my first selection was Brazil, and I chose this because there are many different types of music that are very unique and almost creative. The song I chose is traditional and this type of music is called 'Maxixe' which dates back to the 70's-80's and was originated in Rio de Janeiro. The song I chose was "Fico Assim Sem Você" and the reason I chose this one was because it sounded very soft and calm, kind of as if it can be played on a relaxing Sunday afternoon. One thing I like about this is the lyrics and how they flow with the soft beat. Fico Assim Sem Você (Traditional)

2. Thailand (Asia)

The next place I wanted to pick was Thailand (Asia) because, you know why not. So, for traditional music, I explored the music "Luk Thung" which refers to the diversity and rich cultures influences. For the song, I chose a random song that I thought would catch me attention if I were Thai, I guess.  I like this one with how it started and kept on playing throughout the video. Luk Thung music usually reflects the musical traditions of various ethnic groups. Another thing I love about this is their voice and how they sing. อยู่ในใจไม่เคยลืม - ไผ่ พงศธร【เพลงพิเศษ】 (Traditional)

3.New Zealand

Now, for my third option I chose New Zealand because this is one of the places that I want to travel when I am older and check out. I do not know much of New Zealand so learning about the music is one step into knowing their culture and life. Māori music is a type of music from New Zealand that was introduced by European settlers in the nineteenth century.  A variety of styles imported during the twentieth century, including blues, jazz, country, rock and roll, reggae, and hip hop, with many of these genres given a unique New Zealand interpretation. I chose this video because I thought it sounded beautiful, and not only that but it talks about the waterfalls and ocean of NZ. I liked this because it's not much, but its again one of those where you can sit out and relax listening to it, also due to the fact that it talks about nature almost. Last, it talks about Tangaroa and how it is commander of the sea. IM pretty sure Tangaroa is from Māori Mythology, which is the god of the sea and fertility. Maisey Rika - Tangaroa Whakamautai (Modern/Traditional)

4. Jamaica

Last but not least, Jamaica. When I hear Jamaican music, all I hear are vibes. A type of modern music I found is called "Mento" which is a style of Jamaican folk music that has greatly influenced ska and reggae music. It fuses both African and Europe musical elements. Some instruments include banjo, rhumba box, guitars and other drums! The video I chose kind of reminds me of a video we would watch in class where it shows the music, how to play it, different techniques, background, etc. After watching it and listening to it, this music or song can bring people together to bring joy in each other or find happiness in the world. Looking back and throughout these different types of music from around the world, I can see why music can be so important in life and how it can have different meaning to people in all types of ways. I hope you enjoyed looking at these and listening to some because I did! Seeing all the traditional and modern-day music really makes you want to travel and know more about the place as well. Thanks!

  2. I love the more ambient music you chose throughout. I know you described the Jamaican music as a vibe, but I think that sentiment could also apply to the other selections you chose. It's always fascinating how such wildly different styles of music can all fit into that same niche as ambient vibes (albeit for different moods, but vibes nonetheless).
